1960 TRIUMPH TR3A ROADSTER – 32,010 MILES SHOWING

Triumph TR3A

In 1957 the TR3 was updated, and this revised model was commonly referred to as the Triumph “TR3A”. The cars were not, however, badged as such, and the “TR3A” name was not used officially, as is evident from contemporary sales brochures.

Changes included a new full-width front grille, exterior door handles, and a lockable boot handle. The previously optional full tool kit became standard equipment. The “TR3A” carried over the standard front disc brakes introduced on later TR3s. The car was known for its superior braking ability with its larger tyres , making it an autocross favourite.

In 1959 other changes were made to the car, including raised stampings under the bonnet and boot hinges and under the door handles, as well as a redesigned rear floor section. In addition, the windscreen was attached with bolts rather than the Dzus fasteners used on the early “A” models.

Although the facelifted TR3 is often referred to as the TR3A, it is badged as “Triumph TR3”

The “TR3A” was built between 1957 and 1962. Total production was 58,236 cars, making it the third best-selling TR in its own right. The TR3A was so successful that the original panel press tooling wore out and had to be replaced. It is estimated that only 9,500 of the original 58,000 built survive today

This example presents in Mercedes Red with Black interior trim and is an Australian delivered TR3A built in November 1960 and delivered to Standard Cars of Melbourne aboard the ship “Enleus”.

We hold a Heritage Certificate from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust confirming the above details and that it is a matching numbers car.

Powered by a 1991cc 4 cylinder engine, it produced when new 73Kw and 176Nm and delivered to the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual gearbox with o/drive on 3rd and 4th gears. Performance figures suggest 0-100kph in 11.6 sces and a top sped near 170kph.

The current South Australian owners have provided the following information regarding some of the car’s history:-

The car was owned by Colin Kidd of Sydney, who knew no history of the car prior to 1965.

From 1965 to 1982 the car was in Newcastle NSW.

In 1988 the car was stripped for restoration by Colin Kidd, with new parts ordered from the UK.

Nothing else was done and the car was sold to Eric Carter of the Gold Coast in December 1998.

Eric totally restored the car which was finished in 2003.

During 2004 the car won awards at two major car shows in the Brisbane area and then in 2005 it won the TR Register Concours held in Brisbane.

Frank Bourke of Cowra NSW bought the car from Eric in December 2006.

It was put on full NSW registration in January 2007.

In October 2007 it won first in road class at the TR Register Concours held in Port Macquarie.

It was taken to the TR Register Concours held in Thredbo in 2008.

It won best sports car at the Gnoo Blas car show at Orange in 2008.

It was taken to the TR Register Concours held at Toowoomba in 2010.

Car was sold to Robert Temperly of Ulladulla NSW on the 12th of November 2010.

We hold some of the receipts and paperwork relating to it’s past.

Now under South Australian ownership, it is Historically registered, which is not transferable, however it would be eligible for similar schemes in other jurisdictions, equating to minimal on road costs.
