1956 FJ HOLDEN SPECIAL SEDAN – 39,315 MILES SHOWING

The FJ Holden, of monocoque construction, broadly followed the silhouette of its predecessor, but featured a bolder horizontal styled front grille, along with comfort and decoration upgrades in a new sedan model named the ‘Holden Special’. Originally specified as 60 bhp (45 kW) achieved at 3,800 rpm, the claimed maximum power output from the six-cylinder engine was increased to 65 bhp (48 kW) achieved at 4,000 rpm.

The sedan, in Standard, Business and Special trim levels, and a coupe utility were announced in October 1953 and were followed by a Panel van derivative in December of that year. A wagon prototype was built but the body style was not put into production.

In 1954, Holden’s first exports began with sales of the FJ in New Zealand.

In 1955 the car underwent a mild interior facelift for the Holden Special sedan, along with a variation in paint and trim options. The FJ series was progressively replaced by models from the Holden FE series from July 1956 to May 1957 with a total of 169,969 examples produced.

This example was apparently one of the last built in 1956, before the FE model was released. It has been in the one South Australian ownership since 1958 and a country car. Presenting in pale blue with grey interior trim, it is quite a survivor in mostly original condition.

Powered by a 2.17 Litre 6 cylinder engine, it produced when new 45Kw and 135.7Nm of power and torque, delivered to the rear wheels via a 3 speed manual gearbox. Performance quoted at the time was 0-100kph in 24.0 secs and a top speed near 135kph.

The FJ Holden was never designed to be a performance car, instead a very reliable and practical Australian built car to suit all types of 1950’s type Australian roads. It achieved that easily.

On the performance side, we know that lots of would be racing identities saw the FX & FJ Holdens as ideal race cars, so many were “hotted up ” and they performed great deeds on the track as well.

This particular example is a true survivor and would please a collector from it’s history point of view and also it’s originality point of view.
