1978 FERRARI DINO 308 GT4 COUPE – 88,940 MILES SHOWING
The Dino 308 GT4 was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in November 1973.
Powered by a a 3.0 Litre mid mounted V8 engine and driving through a gated 5 speed gated manual gearbox, it produced 169Kw and 284Nm of power and torque and boasted performance figures of 0-100kph in 6.5 secs and a top speed near 240kph.
The GT4 was a groundbreaking model for Ferrari in several ways: it was the first production Ferrari to feature the mid-engined V8 layout that would become the bulk of the company’s business in the succeeding decades, and was the first production Ferrari with Bertone (rather than Pininfarina) designed bodywork. Pininfarina was upset by the decision to give cross-town rival Bertone the design, considering all they had done for Ferrari. The styling featured angular lines entirely different from its curvaceous 2-seater brother, the Dino 246, and was controversial at the time. Some journalists compared it to the Bertone-designed Lancia Stratos and Lamborghini Urraco, also penned by Marcello Gandini. From the cockpit, the driver sees only the road.
The Dino 308GT4 is every bit a Ferrari and to sit in the driver’s seat, listen to that Italian V8 singing in your ears and shift gears in the gated pattern, it is a superb classic Ferrari to drive and own. Compared to the current values of a Dino 246, the Dino 308GT4 represents great value and is considered now to be of high investment potential in the near future. Because of its age, it is eligible for Historic or club registration in most areas, thus making on road costs minimal.
This example was purchased by an Australian working in the UK in the 80’s, an original RHD model with matching numbers. It came back to Melbourne with him on his return, then they moved to Perth together. A long term ownership of some 32 years with constant attention.
It has just had a major service by one of Adelaide’s leading Ferrari workshops, which included a belt change. Brand new Pirelli Cinturato period correct tyres have been sourced from Longstone tyres in the UK.
The interior is in very good condition, subject of a recent refresh.
