1974 MGB GT V8 – MANUAL + O/DRIVE
What we have here is a beautifully restored and certainly rare in this country, one of the last chrome bumper MGB GT V8’s made at Abingdon, before the rubber bumper model was introduced.
Presenting in Damask Red with Black fabric interior trim, this car was delivered new to it’s first owner by BMC Dealer, University Motors of London on the 12th of October 1974.
We hold the original MG “Passport to Service” which shows all the early services completed by University Motors at Kingston on Thames. We also hold the original handbook, plus a Heritage Certificate issued by the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust confirming it’s origins and that it is a matching numbers car.
History tells us that Ken Costello obtained a few MGBGT shells from MG at Abingdon and decided to experiment with fitting them with an aluminium 3.5 Litre Rover V8 engine. He eventually marketed the cars via University Motors as MG Costello V8s.
The engineers and directors at MG were so impressed with this Costello development, that they decided to make their own, hence was born the MGB GT V8.
The chrome bumper version of the car was made between August 1973 and September 1974, then for the 1975 model the rubber bumper version was introduced and finished production in 1976. A grand total of 2591 V8GT’s were made and the chrome bumper models are by far the most desirable.
Originally powered by a 3.5 Litre aluminium Rover V8 engine, it produced 102Kw and 262Nm of power and torque, delivered to the rear wheels via a 4 speed all sychro. manual gearbox with overdrive. Performance figures at the time of release suggest 0-100kph in 7.9 secs and a top speed near 200kph.
This car spent it’s first 5 years in the UK, was imported to Australia in 1979 at approximately 51,000 miles. It has had two owners in Australia and the present one purchased the car in 1991.
The current owner embarked on a bare metal respray of the car some years ago and has just had the engine rebuilt and bored out to 3.9 Litres together with a polished head, so the car performs in a very lively and calm manner and performance figures could easily exceed the original ones quoted above.
Engine work was completed at considerable expense by Cartek Sales and Service of Melrose Park SA on the 27th of July 2023 and we hold a record of that work.
We also hold a large folder of receipts for work done over the years that it has been in South Australia.
The car has a period correct Webasto folding sunroof which gives the car that added luxury of both open top and fully enclosed motoring.
This amazing MG is currently fully registered in South Australia, but more importantly for a new owner, would be eligible for Historic or Club registration in most jurisdictions, making on road costs minimal.
Make sure you consider this car as a perfect Historic Grand Touring joy, perfect for classic events and club outings and of course show and shines.
