1971 HONDA 1300 9S COUPE MANUAL – 96,696 MILES SHOWING
Quite a rare find these days in Australia, this at the time hot coupe was Honda’s answer to some of the hot small cars of the late 60’s including the Cooper S.
Apparently one of the last Hondas which had the direct involvement of the legendary Soichiro Honda, only a handful of this model ever came to Australia. One was raced at Bathurst in 1971 and finished 41st, which was quite an achievement as quite a few cars were category (DNF) that year.
The front-wheel-drive coupe was typical of Honda’s thinking in many ways. It’s light, at around 900kg, with an air-cooled , dry sump, four-cylinder 1298cc inline four cylinder engine with single overhead cam and four Keihin carburettors. Claiming 116 bhp(86.5Kw) and 107Nm at 7500rpm, it was, with a full-synchro manual four-speed transmission, said to be good for quarter mile times in the mid-17s, which was very respectable for the day. It would have given the odd V8 a fright. Top speed was claimed at the time to be near 185kph.
Eligible for Historic registration in most jurisdictions, this makes this model a perfect car for historic cruises, car shows and club events, together with having minimal on road costs.
