1968 MGC ROADSTER – 24,894 MILES SHOWING

The MGC was a 2,912 cc, straight-six version of the MGB sold from 1967 and produced until August 1969.

The car was given the model code ADO52. It was intended as a replacement for the Austin-Healey 3000 Mk. III which would have been ADO51 but in that form never got beyond the design proposal stage. The first engine to be considered was an Australian-designed six-cylinder version of the BMC B-Series but the production versions used a new seven-main-bearing development of the Morris Engines designed C-Series that was also to be used for the new Austin 3-litre four-door saloon.

In the twin SU carburettor form used in the MGC the engine produced 145 bhp (108 kW) at 5,250 rpm. The body shell needed considerable revisions around the engine bay and to the floor pan, but externally the only differences were a distinctive bonnet bulge to accommodate the relocated radiator and a teardrop for carburettor clearance. It had different brakes from the MGB, 15 inch wheels as compared to the 14 inch wheels on the B and very subtly, a C on the boot lid badge instead of a B.

This example was built in November 1968 and delivered new into Southern California and imported into Australia in 1992, after which it was converted to RHD, using all original MG parts. It presents today in it’s original colour of pretty Pale Primrose Yellow together with Black leather interior trim. The car features a UK made wooden steering wheel, but also comes with its original leather covered standard wheel.

We hold a Heritage Certificate from BMIHT which shows its original credentials and matching number identity.

The bare metal restoration was completed by a father and son team in Adelaide and has been awarded several first prizes at MG Car Club shows. They included in the rebuild, a modern radio/CD player with speakers cleverly hidden under the dash, so you can here the music even with the roof down.

It features optional chrome wire wheels and has both a soft top and full tonneau cover, so motoring is pleasurable with roof up or down. Headlights have been upgraded to genuine Lucas H4 and rewired through relays as well as the horn. Radiator has been flushed and keeps the car at normal 85-90 degree mark. Distributor has been rebuilt with electronic ignition and engine dyno tuned, we hold results of that tune.

Current owner has never driven the car in the rain, so life for the car has been very dry and free of damp and damaging moisture.

The most recent service was completed on the 7th of June 2024, so the car is right up to date for the new owner.

MGCs are quite rare and were made in quite small numbers compared to MGBs, so this is quite an unusual offering. Offering 108Kw and 231Nm of power and torque, delivered to the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual gearbox together with overdrive on 3rd & 4th gears (effectively a 6 ratio gearbox), it produces 0-100kph in 9.8 secs and a top speed near 195kph.

Eligible for Historic registration in most jurisdictions, it equates to minimal on road costs.

The current SA plates RMG680 are available if the car is sold in South Australia.
