1963 HOLDEN EJ SPECIAL SEDAN – MANUAL – 31,539 ORIGINAL MILES
This Holden is an absolute time capsule of the Australian motoring scene in the 60’s. It has been in the one family since new! Read on.
Delivered new by Dependable Motors Ltd of 151 main North road, Nailsworth SA on the 19th of June 1963. This original invoice says it all and total cost was 1124/6/3 ( That is pounds, shillings and pence).
The original number plate was 199-149 but it is not currently attached to the car. The invoice also tells us the original owner traded his 1953 FJ Holden in on the new car for 415/0/0 (pounds, shillings and pence).
We hold the original hand book, service book and warranty card. We also hold a photocopy of the EJ and EH workshop manual.
The original invoice mentions the colour of the car as Atherton/Benalla. My interpretation would be White over Pale Turquoise with green and white interior trim. Most of the paintwork is the original paint.
Powered by a 2.2 Litre 6 cylinder engine, it produced when released 56Kw and 163Nm of power and torque, delivered to the rear wheels via a 3 speed manual gearbox with the gear lever “on the tree” or steering column as we say today. Performance wasn’t such a big thing in the 60’s, but reliability much more in focus. Performance suggests 0-100kph in 19.0 secs and a top speed near 140kph.
The owner has supplied the following comments:-
“The car was purchased in 1963 and stayed with the same owner until he passed away in 2009. He never thought that he would be able to afford a new car, but at age 29 the opportunity arose when Holden were discontinuing the EJ model, the last to have the old grey motor. He fell in love with the model when it first launched and adored the colour – Atherton Ivory over Benalla Turquoise.
The car was used on weekends when the weather was fine for fishing trips around coastal South Australia and drives to the Barossa, Clare and The Riverland. In later years it was used for trips to NSW, Queensland and Canberra. It was lovingly cared for – always garaged and covered in blankets when not in use and the miles on the odometer are original. After the EJ was passed down in the family it has spent the last 2 years in the Strathalbyn Motor Museum on display.
Extras are car radio, drivers wind shield and front seatbelts. Engine virtually original ( spark plugs, leads, hoses, fan belt etc. needed regular replacing as they wore out or perished) Needed a new water pump, windscreen was replaced in Grafton NSW when a stone shattered the original.”
It is quite rare to find a car of this age with such original credentials and paperwork. It will be a worthy collectable early Holden to grace someone’s collection. Certainly a credit to all it’s past owners.
A perfect car for Historic runs, events and car shows.
Eminently eligible for Historic registration in most jurisdictions, this equates to minimal on road costs.
