If ever a car made a statement with it’s presence, here is an amazing car from the excesses of the early 60’s.
America was about to take off into space and this car oozes that early space exploration era.
One of only 2,835 Chrysler New Yorker two-door coupes produced in 1960, which made it a very rare and beautiful car.
Built at the Los Angeles (Maywood) Assembly Plant in Los Angeles, California.
The 1960 Chrysler models were the first to feature uni-body construction and Virgil Exner’s styling was truly ‘space age’ with enormous tail fins that started half way along the doors.
Plus there was the ‘Astro Dome’ dash with its ‘electroluminescence’ lighting and lashings of chrome and stainless steel body adornments. An incredible era in automotive design that will never be repeated.
Powered by an enormous 413ci (6.7Lt) Golden Lion V8 engine, it produced when new 261Kw and 637Nm of power and torque, delivered to the rear wheels via a 3 speed push button auto transmission. Performance figures suggest 0-100kph in 8.4 secs and a top speed near 210kph.
A former interstate owner bought this car locally in 1998. It underwent a full back-to-bare metal restoration not long after, during which time it was discovered the body was arrow-straight and virtually rust-free throughout.
The restoration took several years during which time he started a family, so it was time to (reluctantly) find this beautiful lady a new home. She was sold at a Shannons Auction in 2006.
This vehicle has been in South Australian ownership since 2006 and the current owner has now reluctantly decided to sell the car.
The current South Australian number plates ” NEWYKR ” are available to the next owner, provided it is sold in South Australia.
Currently Historically registered in SA, this cannot be transferred, however this vehicle would be eligible in most jurisdictions for similar schemes, which equates to minimal on road costs.
