1958 HOLDEN FE UTILITY – 47,743 MILES SHOWING
Australia was on its path to modernism when, in July 1956, the local brand Holden, owned by GM, launched the FE lineup. Its shape resembled the 1953 Opel Kapitan from Europe. However, the FE was penned by the Australian stylist Alf Paize under the direction of Glen Smith, who was appointed by GM to ensure the company’s design language.
Soon, the 1956 Holden FE became a huge success, helping the automaker get a stunning 42.7% of the market share in 1957, up from 33.8% in the previous year. The FE was also revolutionary since it introduced the 12-volt electrical system instead of the six-volt one used on the previous FJ lineup.
Holden produced the FE in a few body versions, including a station wagon, a pickup, and a panel van.
This example presents in Grey and White with Red interior trim. The rear tray has a rather unique and period correct canopy fitted to make more use of the rear compartment.
If this example could talk it would say ” I’ve been everywhere man, cross the desert sands man” with all the labels and stickers under the rear tray as a testament to it’s travels.
The current South Australian owner bought the car about two years ago and has recently had all the brakes renewed and the steering box overhauled. It comes with a workshop manual and what looks likes it’s original handbook.
He recently entered the car in the well known Bay to Birdwood run and the car performed perfectly. He mentioned to us that a previous owner had done all the travelling in the car and had collected all the stickers under the back tray.
The Holden FE range was fitted with a 2.2 Litre 6 cylinder engine, producing 52.2Kw and 149Nm of power and torque, delivered to the rear wheels via a 3 speed manual “three on the tree” gearbox. Performance figures suggested at the time are 0-100kph in 23.2 secs and a top speed near 130kph.
With loads of character and history, this is a perfect classic Holden for car events and cruises or even another leisurely lap around the country. Eligible for Historic registration, this equates to minimal on road costs.
