1942 WILLYS JEEP MB – 9,889 MILES SHOWING
A significant part of Australia’s WW2 military effort was the use of Willys Jeeps in various campaigns around the world.
Presenting in the familiar Olive Drab with Brown seats and trim.
This very original looking example bears the Australian Military Division sign of a platypus over a boomerang, representing the 9th Australian Infantry Division. This division served in the Middle East, was involved famously in the defence of Tobruk and also in Borneo.
It has been supplied with a LHD dash, as it has been converted to RHD at some stage, but we understand some Willys Jeeps were made RHD for some areas of conflict.
Also wearing period correct spade and axe on the LHS and the usual jerry-can on the rear. On the dash area webbing pockets which would have been like a glovebox for the military users, maybe for documents and small items.
There is a build plaque on the dash showing a build date of December 1942.
Powered by a 2.2 Litre (134ci) 4 cylinder side valve engine, it produced when new 45Kw and 142Nm of power and torque, delivered to an AWD system via a 3 speed manual gearbox and 2 speed Dana-18 transfer case. Performance for this vehicle wasn’t about acceleration and top speed at all, it was about reliability and the capability of going just about anywhere!
The current owner has the following information regarding the car’s known history:-
“Served in World War II with Australian forces.
Sold at government auction in the early sixties.
Bought by a gentleman in Echuca Victoria who had it converted to right hand drive, it is very well done and a mirror conversion. This meant he was able to register the vehicle. He drove it around Echuca until he passed early 2000. I purchased it from his son it was sitting in a shed next to the Echuca airfield.
I went through it getting it running again not that it required too much. It has been well maintained while I have had it and has participated in multiple ANZAC day parades with historical registration. ”
This vehicle has been Historically registered in South Australia and would be eligible for similar schemes in other jurisdictions, which equates to minimal on road costs.
Supplied by the present owner is ” The Complete WW2 Military Jeep Manual” which covers Willys Model MB and Ford Model GPW. This no doubt would be a valuable asset for future owners to refer to.
